Bipartisan Support Fuels Momentum for Port of Coos Bay’s New Port, as Featured in Politico
For Immediate Release: 3/27/2025
COOS BAY, OR – The Pacific Coast Intermodal Port (PCIP) project at the Port of Coos Bay continues to gain national attention, with a recent Politico feature highlighting its bipartisan support and the growing momentum behind one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the region’s history.
With backing from both Democratic and Republican leaders, the PCIP project represents a unified commitment to strengthening America’s supply chains, expanding trade capacity, and creating thousands of jobs. Senators Ron Wyden (D) and Jeff Merkley (D), along with Representatives Val Hoyle (D) and Cliff Bentz (R), have all recognized the project’s economic importance, while House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chair Sam Graves (R) has emphasized the need for investments like this to bolster national trade efficiency.
“In today’s political landscape, it’s rare to see this level of broad, bipartisan support behind a single infrastructure project,” said Melissa Cribbins, Executive Director of PCIP. “That speaks to just how critical this investment is—not only for Oregon, but for the entire U.S. economy.”
The project has already secured key federal grants, including INFRA and CRISI funding, and recently kicked off a comprehensive community engagement effort with over 70 in-person meetings, to ensure the project continues to advance with both public and private sector engagement. Once complete, the new ship-to-rail container terminal will provide a much-needed alternative to congested West Coast ports, increasing trade competitiveness and reducing supply chain vulnerabilities.
“We are seeing unprecedented momentum,” added Kyle Stevens, President of the Port Board of Commissioners. “Strong support from local, state, and federal leaders, along with significant investment, is continuing to drive this project forward. This is a moment of real transformation for Coos Bay and the broader Pacific trade network.”
